On 21 November 2024, Sustainable Tourism in the Mediterranean will be the focus of attention during two sessions that are jointly organised as a side event during the Sun&Blue Tourism and Blue Economy Congress 2024 in Almería, Spain. These sessions aim to inspire and contribute to the adaptation and mitigation of climate change effects throughout the Mediterranean tourism ecosystem and will see the participation of notable experts from the EU as well as from the field.

  1. Climate Adaptation in Tourism – Building capacity and policy integration (Room 6)
    During the the first part ( (09:00-11:15), regional tourism departments and Destination Management Organizations will have the opportunity to receive clear and adaptable guidance on developing climate action plans through a Capacity Building session. It will highlight the views of a wide range of stakeholders, from representatives of regional tourism networks, environmental and development organisations, corporate ocean responsibility advocates, to initiatives for the sustainable development of the blue economy in the western Mediterranean region. It also forms second Joint Annual Forum of the ‘Enhancing Sustainable Tourism’ Mission and is organised by two projects of this Mission:  COMMUNITY4TOURISM and DIALOGUE4TOURISM.

  2. Sustainable tourism in the Western Mediterranean and official launch of the WestMED Technical Stakeholder Group (room 7)
    The 2nd part (11:30-13:30) is organised by the WestMED initiative and is focused on strengthening the competitiveness and sustainability of the coastal and maritime tourism sector, as part of a smart and resilient blue economy. It will mark the “official launch” of the WestMED Sustainable Tourism Technical stakeholder group, as well as serve as an (invite only) hackathon for some specific tourism related project ideas/proposals.
