Background
On February 12, 2024 a national event on “Green Shipping” in Algeria will be organized by WestMED’s Algerian National Hub, in coordination with the National Coordinator of the WestMED Initiative of the Ministry of Fisheries and Fisheries Production.
It will bring together around 60 participants and representatives from the Ministry of Fisheries, Energy, Industry, Scientific Research, Environment and Transport, technical establishments, businesses, associations as well as academics and national and international researchers and experts.
Objective
The objective is to promote the WestMED Initiative to local stakeholders in Algeria and to contribute to the reflection on green shipping in the Mediterranean region – specifically related to the direct use of LNG. The use of LNG in maritime transport is no longer just a proposal but a concrete reality of the global energy transition. LNG is used worldwide as cargo in the context of commercial exchange and also as fuel for bunkering ships.
The new regulations of the International Maritime Organization, which came into force on January 1, 2020, made it possible to lower the authorized ceiling for the sulphur content in marine fuels to 0.5%, in certain so-called controlled emissions zones (ECA). The content is 0.1%. Projections are underway to recommend the Mediterranean as an ECA zone in 2022.
Algeria’s experience will be shared during this event which constitutes a real lever for the development of the blue economy in Algeria.
WestMED Green Shipping Technical Group
During this national event, an overview of the work and experiences of West Mediterranean countries will be illustrated by WestMED’s Green Shipping Technical Group
The speakers will discuss the advantages and opportunities, as well as the means and organizational mechanisms for the development of economic, job-creating activities and investment in high value-added services.
Funding opportunities
Finally, this event will explore the different and numerous financing opportunities existing through cooperation with the European Union, including the support offered by the WestMED Initiative framework.
