Despite the international and European efforts to address climate change and mitigate the negative effects on our planet and human livelihood, extreme weather events, sea-level rise, coastal erosion, floods and many other consequences are a reality to face, in particular for coastal areas and their communities.

The EU needs to quickly modify its policies and actions to respond to the already occurring environmental calamities and put in place adaptation measures, considering both the short-term emergency situations and the long-term objective of building a climate resilient Europe, as stated in the European Climate Law and in the new EU Climate Adaptation Strategy.

Maritime regions play an important role in this context as they experience the effects of climate change on their territory and contribute to the design and implementation of both place-based and evidence-based strategies. The event is organised in the framework of the Seas, Rivers, Islands and Coastal Areas (SEArica) Intergroup of the European Parliament, together with the support of the Interreg Italy-Croatia AdriaClim project and the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions.
