Towards a Sustainable Blue Economy in Algeria
The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries (DGPA), acting as National Coordinator of the WestMED Initiative, is hosting the WestMED National Event on 19 October 2026 at the Naya Hotel in Bab Ezzouar, Algiers. Supported by the EU and the WestMED Assistance Mechanism, the event advances the regional roadmap adopted at the 2018 Ministerial Meeting in Algiers.
Context & Purpose
Algeria considers the blue economy a strategic pillar for economic diversification and food security across key sectors, including sustainable fisheries, aquaculture, ports, maritime transport, tourism, desalination, marine energy, and blue biotechnology. The event brings together key stakeholders -government institutions, private operators, researchers, financial institutions, and civil society -to foster collaboration, spur innovation, and secure project funding while preserving coastal ecosystems.
Key Themes & Agenda
- Session 1: Progress and success stories of the WestMED Initiative in Algeria (e.g., POWER4MED, CallmeBLUE, MEDIGREEN).
- Session 2: EU and national funding mechanisms (Interreg NEXT MED, EMFAF, Horizon Europe, etc.).
- Session 3: Maritime clusters as drivers of innovation and competitiveness.
- Closing: Open discussion, synthesis of recommendations, and a networking lunch.
Expected Outcomes
Clearer priorities for sustainable maritime growth, stronger cross-sector partnerships, and expanded access to funding instruments for Algerian project developers.
